Alleged founder of Nut Cases gang sentenced for killing
A man prosecutors call the founder of the violent street gang the Nut Cases was sentenced to 75 years to life in prison today for the killing of an acquaintance.

Gregory Colbert, 27, was convicted in Alameda County Superior Court in December for the June 7, 2004 killing of 20-year-old Glen Phaso. Deputy District Attorney Michael Nieto said Colbert, already a convicted felon, killed Phaso either because he raped Colbert`s good friend the day before the murder, or because Phaso refused to commit a murder that Colbert ordered.

The Nut Cases were an Oakland street gang who told police that they spent their time getting high and playing the video game "Grand Theft Auto," then went and perpetrated the violent acts shown in the game, including robbery and murders. They called themselves the Nut Cases, and several members sported tattoos showing the Planters logo Mr. Peanut and the words "Nut Case."

Colbert was not implicated in five, high profile murders that took place in 2002 and 2003, for which six people have been charged. Nieto said prosecutors had evidence that Colbert was culpable in those murders, but not enough was admissible.

The killing spree began in the fall of 2002 and ended when the group was arrested in January 2003.

Demarcus Ralls, Colbert`s half-brother, was found guilty of four murders and several other crimes last year, and sentenced in July to four consecutive life terms in prison. Another one of the six defendants struck a plea deal with prosecutors.

Nieto, who called Colbert "a parasite on the city of Oakland," said Colbert was "smiling and winking," at prosecutors during the sentencing.
